TORONTO, CANADA - A clinical technique report published in Journal of Prosthodontics outlined a complete digital workflow for implant-supported overdentures, covering data acquisition, virtual design, milling and final prosthesis delivery. Implant-retained overdentures are a reliable treatment option for edentulous patients, offering improved retention and stability compared with conventional complete dentures. The traditional analog workflow relies on physical impressions, stone model pouring and manual wax try-in, which involves multiple clinical appointments and many manual laboratory steps, introducing potential errors and increasing total treatment time.

The report described treatment for several fully edentulous patients who received two axial implants in the mandible. Intraoral scanning was used to capture implant scan bodies, soft tissue contours and remaining occlusal records directly inside the mouth. All digital datasets were imported into prosthetic CAD software for virtual arrangement of artificial teeth and design of the overdenture framework. The milled acrylic denture base and attachment housing were manufactured by a dental milling machine, followed by teeth bonding, finishing and polishing. The authors compared the digital approach with conventional analog procedures. The digital workflow reduced chairside time for patients, minimised distortion risks from impression materials and plaster models, and improved the precision of attachment positioning. The team also mentioned some limitations. Intraoral scanning may encounter difficulties in patients with abundant mobile soft tissue. Clinicians must be proficient in digital scanning and verify the fit of scan bodies carefully. Proper maintenance instructions are essential for patients, as regular cleaning of implant attachments helps prevent peri-implant mucositis. The report concludes that this streamlined digital workflow is predictable and repeatable for suitable edentulous patients seeking implant overdenture therapy.
