Targeted relief prevents framework pressure over bony spines and tori to avoid mucosal soreness and ulceration. Mucosa over bony prominences is extremely thin with minimal cushion capacity. Direct metallic pressure during mastication rapidly triggers pain and mucosal ulcer. Nevertheless, over‑relief creates excessive framework wobble, compromises retention and masticatory efficiency. Relief must be localized rather than generalized spacing.
Bony prominences, sharp spines, mandibular mylohyoid ridges and maxillary tori are position‑marked on gypsum cast prior to fabrication. Framework tissue surface receives 0.3‑0.5 mm relief gap over bony prominences. Bone undercut areas get undercut relief, and adequate relief for mucosal fold zones so framework shall not impinge on movable mucosa.
Relief is localized only over hard bony elevations; most tissue‑bearing areas maintain appropriate adaptation without broad‑area spacing. Framework is verified back on original gypsum cast: no contact over marked bony sites while surrounding mucosal‑bearing areas fit properly without global rocking.
Relief positions shall be double‑checked during framework try‑in stage. Localized relief balances framework stability and patient comfort, lowering clinical complaints of soreness and mucosal ulceration for partial denture wearers.
