Structure & Principle
A Hawley retainer has a plastic baseplate on the palatal/lingual side of the dental arch and metal wires attached to teeth surfaces. Metal wires exert gentle elastic force via the baseplate's support. It keeps teeth in new positions after orthodontics by preventing them from shifting back.

When to Use
•
Post-orthodontics: After braces are removed, it helps teeth stabilize in their new spots and reduces relapse.
•
Mild tooth issues: For slight misalignment, it can correct and hold teeth without complex treatment.
•
Pre-restoration: Before dental work like crowns or implants, it can position teeth for better results.

Advantages
•
Adjustable: Metal wires can be bent to change force and direction on teeth for personalized results.
•
Comfy: Thin baseplate and well-placed wires cause little irritation and are easy to get used to.
•
Durable: Made of strong materials, it lasts long with proper care, saving on replacements.
•
Easy clean: Simple structure allows easy cleaning with a toothbrush and water to prevent bacteria.

Disadvantages
•
Ugly look: Exposed metal wires can affect appearance, upsetting image-conscious patients.
•
Speech issues: Initially, it may make speaking unclear, but most adapt over time.
•
Needs cooperation: Patients must follow wearing instructions strictly; incorrect use can lead to relapse.
